A well-earned break in Dumfries and Galloway, south west Scotland, will provide a memorable experience, for young and old.
There is fantastic local food, including lobster off the boat at Port William a mile away, plus award winning beef, lamb and cheese. There are wonderful local pubs, decent beer, cosy restaurants, gardens, walks, cliff top paths and rocky coves. And the chance to reconnect in a peaceful, beautiful place.
For youngsters, there is playing on the beach with mum and dad, rock pooling, catching crabs, play parks by the sea, the Cream O’Galloway ice cream farm, Cocoabean chocolate factory, nature trails, cycle tracks, picnics and the deer, birds, hares, cows and wildlife that surround the cottage, provide a rich, shared experience.
For older children and teens, the great outdoors awaits with world-class mountain biking, zip wires, climbing, kayaking, paddle-boarding, hiking, horse-riding, scrambling, not to mention the beach and a family favourite, competitive crabbing. Burnside is a great base for the remote Galloway Hills and the activity centres at Laggan Outdoors and Lock Ken.
Galloway Cottage sleeps five; gardens; views and wildlife
Burnside Cottage is a 19th century farm workers’ house. Built in the 1850s, our family bought the bungalow in 1970 and restored it. We have been visiting ever since. The holiday cottage sits in a tranquil valley, amid rolling green fields about a mile from the sea and within easy reach of sandy beaches and rocky coves. There are no other houses nearby. It will be just you, the wildlife and the view.
The house is in a half-acre site and fully enclosed. The front garden is a natural wilderness; great for hide-and-seek. At the back we have a patio, barbecue and table where we sit out and and enjoy a glass of wine, picnics and dinner. Inside, there are double, twin and single bedrooms. The kitchen and living room are open plan. There is a log burning stove to take off the chill on cool evenings with free wood and WiFi.
The cottage is an area known locally as ‘The Machars’, a peninsula that stretches south of Netwon Stewart and into the Solway. Burnside is way out west in old Galloway, 50 miles from Dumfries and a few miles from the picturesque fishing village of the Isle of Whithorn and ancient Christian site of Whithorn.
